THE
CATHOLIC CRUSADES AGAINST ISLAM IN THE NAME OF ZANZIBAR
REVOLUTION
======================================================================
HISTORICAL
BACKGROUND
====================
While the study of Islam in East
Africa has attracted much attention of
contemporary scholars,
most of them neglect the Crusade against Islam in
Zanzibar. Such
a religious conflict seems to belong to the Middle East,
despite
the fact that Christian Crusade is an ecumenical imperative
against
Islam in any Muslim country, including Zanzibar. Allah
says:
They (Non-Muslims) will never cease fighting you
until
they turn you back from your Faith (of Islam) if
they
can. (Surah al-Baqarah; 2:217).
One of the most prominent
Catholic Crusaders against Islam in Zanzibar is
Julius
Nyerere. Before he became the President of Tanganyika (now
Tanzania)
in 1961, Nyerere was frequently heard and quoted that
he wished he could tow
out Zanzibar into the Indian Ocean, if
he can.
True Nyerere was one of the best known political figures
but the least
understood of African leaders. Many Africans
who struggled for liberation
from the Western imperialism,
believed that Nyerere was the supreme
practitioner of the
African Christian Liberation.
Others considered Nyerere as
the man who committed himself and the resources
of his
country to rid the Africa from the hegemony of Colonialism and
racial
apartheid, the major evils of Western imperialism
in the African history.
Political philosophers view
him as the outstanding political guru, thinker,
writer
and spokesmen in Africa and the chief architect of socialism
in
Tanzania, branded as ROMANTIC TANZAPHILIA by Professor
Ali A. Mazrui. But
Dr. Lacy Creighton, Professor of World
Christianity called it a CHRISTIAN
SOCIALISM in a secular of
Tanzania.
In the Euro-Christian parlance, Nyerere was a serious
bulwark against what
was believed as Communism in Zanzibar. They
regarded him as the only African
leader to suppress (Islam
in) Zanzibar which was equated with Communism
during the Cold
War to the extent that the administration of President
Lyndon
Johnson, concidered the Zanzibar Action Plan (ZAP) the
highest
priority after the Vietnam War.
The role
of Nyerere for the Catholic Crusade in Zanzibar, started after
he
had expelled the active Tanganyikan Muslims from
their executive leadership
of Tanganyika African National
Union (TANU) and exerted his efforts for
intervention
of the Muslims in Zanzibar.
He manipulated Abeid Amani
Karume (1905-1972), born in Nyasaland (Malawi),
the
President of the African Association (AA) under Nyerere. This
party
opposed to multi-racial government and it was not formed
for the
independence of Zanzibar. They stated in their AFRIKA
KWETU (Afrika is Our
Home), the official mouthpiece
of the African Association that Zanzibaris
should
not have their own Self-Government after the British
Colonialism:
We wish to assure all the so called Zanzibaris
that
anything short of an African state will never
be
accepted when self-government is achieved in
this
Protectorate. We are also opposed to
multi-racial
government in these islands. It is against all
this
Association stands for. We want Zanzibar to become
an
African state like the Gold Coast. (Afrika Kwetu,
May
5, 1955).
Nyerere manipulated Karume to merge the African
Association with the Shirazi
Association (SA), whose
President was Thabit Kombo Jecha al-Shirazy
(1904-1988), born
at Kizimkazi in Zanzibar. Hence, Nyerere formed
Afro-Shirazi
Party (ASP) on February 5, 1957 but it seemed to be
under
Karume.
In 1960, Sheikh Muhammad Shamte Hamad
al-Shirazy, born at Chambani, Pemba
and Sheikh Ameir Tajo
Ameir al-Shirazy, born at Makunduchi in Zanzibar
formed
the Zanzibar and Pemba Peoples' Party (ZPPP), whose
Secretary
Abdullah Amour Sulayman al-Shirazy, born in Pemba
was the editor of MWANGAZA
(The Light), the mouthpiece of the
ZPPP.
Many Orientalists and Christian Missionaries emphasize
the differences
between the Africans and the Arabs but
ignore the impact of Islam, which is
so strong in Zanzibar
politics that led the coalition of the ZPPP and
Zanzibar
Nationalist Party (ZNP) in 1961, after the ASP had failed to
win
the support of the ZPPP to form a coalition force for the
so called African
independence. Following their discussion with
Sheikh Ameir Tajo Ameir, the
ZNP delegates flew to Pemba for
discussion with Sheikh Muhammad Shamte
Hamadi. Other delegates
were Sheikh Miraji Shaalab, Abdul Rahman Muhammad
Babu, Sheikh
Maalim Hilal and Sheikh Ali Muhsin.
BRITISH ROLE IN CATHOLIC
CRUSADE
================================
One of the major British
contributions to Catholic Crusade in Zanzibar
(1890-1963) was
the selective recruitment of policemen from Tanganyika,
Kenya
and Nyasaland. The British claimed that Zanzibaris were not
suitable
for the Zanzibar police force because they are
pyisically shorter, less
muscular and slim than the African
immigrants. Thus, the recruitment for the
Zanzibar police force
was overwhelmingly composed of African immigrants.
Shortly before
independence, the Zanzibar government discharged a large
number
of the African policemen. They had experienced in the use of
fire
arms and were well familiar with the logistics and
organization of the
Zanzibar police. They possessed a deep
personal grievances against the new
government.
Because
the democratically elected Zanzibar government feared that
the
immigrants African policemen were deeply sympathetic towards
the ASP their
loyalty could not be depended upon if a political
crisis would occur. The
government initiated a program of
repatriating the African policemen to
their respective countries
of origin and were replaced by native recruits
chosen for loyalty
to the government.
The greatest danger in this British Colonial
plot was that the Africans
constituted the most experienced and
well-trained police force while the new
recruited police were
less experienced and hastily trained. The repatriation
program
demoralized the Africans in the Zanzibar police. Their
deep-rooted
grievances can be traced back in AFRIKA KWETU,
the mouth-peace of the
African Association, affiliated to
the Tanganyikan African Association (TAA)
under Julius
Nyerere:
We Africans still live and squalor; our minds are
warped
by hatred and suspicious as to the aims and policy of
the
Zanzibar Government. It is no good blaming us for we
are
ignorant, backward uneducated lot...the alien races
have
and are making us politically hopeless by denying
us
equal facilities. (AFRIKA KWETU; August 28, 1952).
In
case of the Catholic Crusade in Zanzibar, Nyerere worked hand
in glove
with Oscar Kambona, his close confidante and
schoolmate at the Edinburgh
University where in 1910, the
Second World Conference of Churches (WCC)
discussed
the threat to Islam in East Africa. It was unanimously agreed
that
an African Christian is better for leadership
than an African Muslim. Every
assistance was therefore
given to Nyerere to combat Islam in East Africa
after
the Anglo-Dutch Colonialism.
When Tanganyika gained its
independence in 1961, Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya,
Milton
Obote of Uganda and Julius Nyerere of Tanganyika had a Summit
Meeting
on June 5, 1963 at Nairobi, Kenya. In this conspiracy
of the Christian
leaders, Zanzibar was neither represented
nor even mentioned in this Summit.
These leaders unanimously
pledged their selfish regional Declaration under
the spirit of
Pan-Africanism:
We (Nyerere, Obote and Kenyatta),
the (Christian)
leaders of the people and Governments of East
Africa
(Tanganyika,
Uganda and Kenya)...pledge ourselves to
the
political federation of East Africa and we are
prompted
by the spirit of Pan-Africanism, and not by mere
selfish
regional interests. (p. 1).
UGANDAN ROLE IN CATHOLIC
CRUSADE
================================
Besides Nyerere, one
among the radical leaders of the successful Crusade
against
Islam in Zanzibar was John Okello. He achieved a world fame
after
Crusade in the name of the Zanzibar Revolution. His profile
is imperative
though his information is mostly denied due to
its contradiction with
"Official" version by the NATIONALIST,
a mouth-piece of the then ruling
party of Tanganyika African
National Union (TANU) under Nyerere.
The contradiction of
Okello starts with his origin. Some said that he was a
Luo
and born in Kenya but many contend that he was born in 1937 at Lira in
a
Lango district of Uganda. Okello worked as domestic servant
in Soroti,
Uganda and in Kisumu, Kenya before being a gardner
at Nairobi. Perhaps his
first military experience was with the
C. Argwing-Kodhes's Nairobi African
District Congress, the most
militant movement similar to the Mau Mau
guerilla.
When
Okello was released from jailed for a sexual offence, he worked
in
Machakos butchery. He later moved to Mombasa but since
he did not find a job
there he went to Takunga. Finally
in 1959, he went to Chake Chake, the
sister island of
Zanzibar. There, he settled at Votongoji, making charcoal
and
painting.
Like many other African Diasporas in Zanzibar,
Okello also navigated with
the ASP, founded by Nyerere but
it appeared to be under Karume. In 1961,
Okello became the
Secretary of the Afro-Shirazi Party Youth League (ASPYL),
a
Marxist militant wing affiliated to the Tanganyika African National
Union
Youth League (TANUYL) under by Nyerere. Hence, Okello
established
connections among the Tanganyikan policemen for the
Catholic Crurade in
Zanzibar.
CHRISTIAN MOTIVATION
FOR REVOLUTION
===================================
The highest
education of Okello was standard seven in a Primary School of
the
Church Missionary Society (CMS) at Alowi, Uganda. In his book;
ZANZIBAR
REVOLUTION (CRUSADE), he said that his most
favoured subject was
Christianity. He said that his baptized
name Gideon ordained him to lead the
Revolution in Zanzibar. It
was launched for Christianity as Okello stated
its Biblical
justification:
Be patient, therefore brethren until the coming of
the
Lord. Behold the husband man waits for the
precious
fruits of the earth, and has long patience for it
until
he establish your hearts for the coming of the Lord
of
Sabbath. (James; 5:7-8).
According to Okello, his
God of Christianity appointed him to combat what he
called
the danger (of Islam) in Zanzibar and was empowered by his God
to
redeem prisons and to go Unguja (Zanzibar) for no
Crusade could be
successful in Pemba unless Unguja must first
succumb. This is a clear
testimony that Okello's motivation
was not the REVOLUTION as we are taught
to believe. Rather,
a CATHOLIC CRUSADE in the name of the ZANZIBAR
REVOLUTION
against ISLAM IN ZANZIBAR and East Africa in general.
Okello
was among those who went to the University of Havana, Cuba in
1961
for a two year military training, a prelude for the
CRUSADE IN ZANZIBAR.
Some denied that Okello went to Cuba,
others maintained that he was awarded
a scholarship to Havana
by the ZNP, with the promise of a senior police post
upon
his return. When this did not materialize he returned in June
1963,
just one month after the ASP's defeat in election of July
1963.
It was this month of July that the Rev. Frank Schildnecht,
the White Father
and Orientalist who monitored the Muslims
activities in Africa for the
Catholic Church, sent his
report to Pope Paul (1963-1968) that the East
African
Muslims are becoming stronger and a threat to Christianity in
Kenya,
Uganda and Tanganyika under the umbrella of the
East African Muslims Welfare
Society (EAMWS) based in
Mombasa.
The EAMWS was offering Islamic, cultural, economic and
charitable to all
East African Muslims and it was managing
115 schools in the East African
countries. It was planning to
build an Islamic University in Zanzibar,
similar to University
of Beirut, Lebanon. Its Financial Secretary was Aziz
Khaki
from Zanzibar, and religious advisor was Sheikh Hassan bin
Ameir
Hassan al-Shirazi, founder president of the DAW'A
AL-ISLAMIYYAH in
Tanganyika and Zanzibar. He was the arch-enemy
of Nyerere since 1954 until
he was deported to Zanzibar in
1968 when EAMWS was banned by Nyerere with
the following short
statement:
The Minister of Home Affair has by command of
the
President (Julius Nyerere) declared the Tanzania
Branch
of the East African Muslims Welfare Society (EAMWS)
and
Tanzania Council of the East African Muslim
Welfare
Society to be unlawful societies under the
provisions
of section 6(1) of the Societies
Ordinance. (The
Standard, December 20, 1968).
Before being
banned by (Bishop) Nyerere the EAMWS had built
schools, mosques
and a hostel in Tanganyika,
Kenya and Uganda as follows:

When
Okello returned from Cuba he contacted some opponents
and grieved
former immigrant policemen. He formed an
Anti-Government Secret Party whose
main supporters were
members of the Zanzibar and Pemba Paint Workers Union,
the
ASPYL and Construction Building Workers Union. The core of
his
supporters were predominantly immigrant policemen who were
hired and
discharged by the British Colonialism.
Among
them was, Constable Absalom Anwi Ingen, a Luo from Kenya. He was
a
Deputy Field Marshall under John Okello. Both worked
hand in gloves with
Corporal Joseph Mugambwa, a Girima from
Kenya. These Christian Crusaders
collaborated with Seif Bakari,
a Marxist Muslim from Tanganyika who was
trained in Cuba. He
became the President of ASPYL affiliated to TANU founded
by
Nyerere, a devout Catholic against Islam in Zanzibar.
Between
October to December 1963, Okello addressed meetings at Bambi
while
choosing his hardliners of Crusade. He was making
sure that most of them are
not the Zanzibar natives, such as
Ramadhan Haji Faki who was dismissed from
the Zanzibar police
force by the British. According to Okello, only 30
natives
joined the remaining 300 (actually 600) immigrants from East
and
Central African countries.
Titus Mabau, the
Tanganyika policeman was his close link, personally besides
his
lieutenants. Other lieutenants were Abdullah Mfaranyaki, a Ngoni
from
Tanganyika. He had a military experience from the Second
World War
(1939-1945) and was a former Tanganyika police bugler
and Said Bavuai, a
radical member of ASPYL; Matias Simba,
known as Corporal Joseph Muyambwa of
Kenya.
One
of his lieutenants was Muhammad Abdullah, famous as Kaojore or
Machale,
a Makonde from Mozambique. This Catholic Crusader was
so ruthless that on
September 1964, he gunned down five Muslims
in the ITHNASHERI MOSQUE at
Kiponda after I'sha prayers. One
of them was the eight-year boy named Abbas
Kassim. The
remaining were Seyyid Abdul Muttalib, Seyyid Ali Asghar,
Haji
Abdul-Hashim Tejani and Babu Haji. Until his death,
Kaojore was never sent
to court of justice as if the Zanzibar
and the Union Governments endorsed
his killings.
Okello
directed his lieutenants to recruit Crusaders prior to November
1963
before he formed a "COUNCIL OF WAR" and ordered
them:
To collect a particular stone colored black, white
and
red from a particular location (Bambi?) and then to
crush
the stone so that grains from each colour could
be
inserted with water into a bottle and be
preserved. (p.
230).
In December 1963, Okello registered
recruits and named them "FREEDOM
FIGHTERS"
before he told them that his God gave them
direction:
The Freedom Fighters to kill a black cat and a black
dog,
mix their blood and brains in a pot and add some of
the
mixture from Okello's bottle after which
the (Freedom)
Fighters were to jump three times across the
mixture,
which was to be spread on the line of
advance. (p. 231).
When Zanzibar gained
independence on December 10, 1963, it became a member
of
the Commonwealth nations. It joined the United Nations on December
16,
1963 and was represented by Hilal bin Muhammed bin
Hilal. When the Zanzibar
Government declared to form the
model of the Islamic State, it was
orchestrated by Catholic
Crusaders as reincarnation of Arabisation and
revivalism
of Islamization.
TANGANYIKAN ROLE IN CATHOLIC
CRUSADE
====================================
Those who
staged an assault on Ziwani armory knew the security system,
the
locations of armoires and ammunition. On January 7, 1964
a ship known as Ibn
Khadun, named after Muhammad Abdul Rahman
ibn Khaldun (1332-1406), known as
"father" of sociology
and global history. The ship called at Dar es Salaam
with a
military cargo to be used for the liberation of South Africa.
The
authorities in Dar es Salaam, with their Colonial aspiration used
the
cargo to bring the newly liberated Zanzibar under their
Black Colonialism.
The Mobile Force gave permission to most
of the Crusaders to attend a Fete
which was organized at the
site where Abeid Karume (1964-1972) was gunned
down with
eight bullets.
The Dar es Salaam authorities smuggled Catholic
Crusaders and weapons
reportedly on schooners owned by a famous
Jewish merchant known as Misha
Frezeinberg, who was trading
in lobsters in Zanzibar. Thus it became easy to
break into the
Police Stations, not with stones, spears and daggers as it
had
been alleged but with modern weapons and barracks from Dar es
Salaam.
Both Kenya and Tanganyika had trained a core of Crusaders
with modern
weapons. They attacked the Zanzibar government at the
arsenal of the Ziwani
Police Station. Edington Kisai, a Catholic
from Moshi who was promoted to
Superintendent of the Ziwani
Police Station was in charge of the key of this
garrison. After
the ZANZIBAR CATHOLIC CRUSADE, Kisasi became the first
Zanzibar
Police Commissioner
On January 11, 1964 Okello commanded that
all the Arabs, meaning the
Muslims; between the age of 18
and 55 to be mercilessly killed. There was a
strong resistance
at Malindi Police Station but when there was no hope for
the
success, Sultan Jamshid bin Abdullah bin Khalifah bin Haroub bin
Thuwein
(1963-1964) was advised to leave the country. On
January 12, 1964 at 7.00
a.m. Okello broadcast to Freedom
Fighters:
I am Field Marshall! Okello! You imperialists there is
no
longer an imperialist government on this Island. It
is
now the government of the Freedom Fighters. Wake up
you
black men. Let everyone of you take a gun and
ammunition
and start to fight against any remnants of imperialism
in
these islands (p. 143).
In the same morning,
Okello told Jamshid bin Abdullah bin Khalifah: "You
are
allowed 20 minutes to kill your children and wives and
then kill yourself."
(p. 145). The Sultan escaped through
Kenya yet the Crusade was successful
due to the fact that a
large number of modern arms from Kenya and Tanganyika
from
where 600 Crusaders crossed the Zanzibar Channel in the midnight
of
January 11, 1964 to Zanzibar. They joined 330 Crusaders led
by Okello.
They invaded Zanzibar in the midnight of January
11, 1964 under the
self-appointed "Field Marshal"
John Okello, a militant Christian from
Uganda. The
objective of the Zanzibar Revolution was a Crusade against
Islam
as Okello stated in his book; REVOLUTION IN ZANZIBAR
that God appointed him
to make revolution for the sake
of Christianity. He quoted the following
Biblical passage for his
justifications:
Go now, you rich men, weep and howl for your
miseries
that shall come upon you! Your riches are
corrupted,
and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and
silver
is cankered, and rust of them shall be a
witness
against you, and shall eat your flesh as if were
fire.
You have reaped down your fields in cries of
them
which have reaped are entered into ears of the Lord
of
Sabbath. You have lived in pleasure on the earth
and
been wanton. You have nourished your hearts as in
a
day of slaughter. You have not, you kill and desire
to
have and cant obtain fight and war, yet you have
not
asked, and receive not, because you ask amiss,
that
you consume it upon your lusts (James
5:1-6).
The "Freedom Fighters" came from Tanganyika,
Kenya, Uganda, Rhodesia
(Zimbabwe), Nyasaland (Malawi)
and Mozambique. Although there are no
accurate figures, Okello
reported that 13,635 Arabs (Muslims) were killed
and
21,462 were detained. It is known that the ZANZIABAR HOLOCAUST was
so
horrendous that 100 Muslims were baked to death at Bambi in
TANURI (The
Copra-Kiln), a similitude of gas chamber by
Nazis for the JEWISH HOLOCAUST!
However, the Catholic Crusaders
in Zanzibar never tell that their
"Revolution" under the auspices
of Nyerere, reminiscent of the SPANISH
INQUISITION which led
to the last stronghold of the Muslim State in Spain.
THE
CRUSADE WITHIN REVOLUTION
=============================
It
appears that there was dichotomy in the on going saga of the
ZANZIBAR
REVOLUTION. Some militants participated the REVOLUTION
for CRUSADE against
ISLAM in Zanzibar. This was under the
clandestine of Nyerere through ASP in
collaboration with other
Christian leaders in Africa and the United Kingdom.
Among
others, his book; CRUSADE AND LIBERATION (1978), bears witness
to his
CRUSADE IN ZANZIBAR.
Other militant Muslims
jumped into bandwagon of the REVOLUTION for COMMUNISM
or
SCIENTIFIC SOCIALISM under Abdul Rahman Muhammad Babu through
Ummah
Party. In this bandwagon, there was a ideological
differences of objectives
between Nyerere, a devout
Catholic and Abdul Rahman Muhammed Babu, a
socialist
Marxist.
It can be argue that being a Zanzibari Muslim,
Abdul Rahman Muhammad Babu
was unknowingly blackmailed
by Catholic Crusaders like Mustafah Kamal
Atartuk,
a British trainee who was used by the Anglican Crusaders
against
the supremacy of Islam in Turkey. Both Zanzibar
and Turkey advocated
Pan-Islamism against Christianization
of Muslim nations during the Ottoman
Empire.
Both
Nyerere and Babu studied in England. The former was trained
for
CHRISTIANISM in Zanzibar but the later was interested for
MARXISM like
Mustafah Kamal Atartuk. No wonder that Hashil
Seif Hashil, the former
Militant Muslim Communist under the
auspices of the Ummah Party said that in
the first night,
there was a chaos everywhere. It appears to me that many
did
not know dichotomy between the CRUSADE and the REVOLUTION. According
to
Hashil Seif, they did not know what they were doing
until the Ummah Party
explained the purpose of (their)
REVOLUTION.
Hashil Seif said that the Ummah youth were assigned
missions by the ASP who
did not know what to perform these
missions (CRUSADE or REVOLUTION)
themselves. Hashil
Seif, one among the three who were trained in Cuba were
sent
to invade the prison which was a difficult operation because those
who
had tried before were killed but they managed. Kudos! the
Cuban Catholic
Crusaders for their training.
After
the operation, they were asked to invade Malindi Police Station
under
the leadership of another Ummah cadre Amour Dugeshi. Many
people were killed
but Hashil Seif did not participate in this
invasion. Instead he was sent
with 12 people by Aboud Jumbe, then
Organizing Secretary of ASP to invade
Cable and Wireless. Hashil
Seif took a telephone and called Aboud Jumbe and
telling him that
the Cable and Wireless was under his control. Then Aboud
Jumbe
asked Hashil Seif to tell the world that Zanzibar had made
a
REVOLUTION (CRUSADE) and should be recognized as soon as
possible!!!
Tanganyika and other African countries, recognized it
as "ZANZIBAR
REVOLUTION" while the United States (and
UK) branded it a "CUBAN REVOLUTION"
or "BABU
REVOLUTION" and sometime the "UMMAH PARTY REVOLUTION" but
Babu
himself named it "LUMPEN REVOLUTION" while the
Ummah Party named it
"SOCIALIST REVOLUTION" and to this
writer, is a clear "CATHOLIC CRUSADE"
against ISLAM IN
ZANZIBAR.
One month after the CATHOLIC CRUSADE in the name
of ZANZIBAR REVOLUTION
which rocked the entire African
history, Keith Kyle, the then British
correspondent
for East Africa in his articles in "SPECTATOR"
titled "Gideon
(Okello) Voice" (February 7, 1964)
and "How it Happened" (February 14, 1964)
stated
that "certain (Christian) members of the Tanganyika and
Kenyan
Governments were involved in Revolution (Crusade)"
in Zanzibar and "Okello"
(actually it
was Nyerere who) appointed Karume to be the President of
the
Zanzibar People's Republic.
MORE CRUSADES IN
ZANZIBAR

Another phase of the CATHOLIC
CRUSADE was the assassination of Karume. It
was a moot point
whether it was a case of poetic justice or irony that one
bullet
was for each of his eight years (1964-1972) he ruled Zanzibar
with
iron-rode. Ostensibly, his assassination on April 7,
1972 was a Biblical
imperative if not a prophetic attributed to
Jesus (pbuh) that he who comes
by the sword shall perish
by the sword (Matthew; 26:52) and Nyerere
continued
what was left by the CATHOLIC CRUSADERS from Portugal after
being
cemented by the Anglo-Dutch Colonial Crusaders in ZANZIBAR
and TANGANYIKA.
